Women with Disabilities Have Rights

Maseru – The Administration Manager in the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. ‘Mareithabetse Seleteng says women with disabilities are women and have rights like their able bodied counterparts.

She was speaking during commemoration of women’s month held by the Office of the First Lady in collaboration with Lesotho National Federation of the Disabled LNFOD Women’s Committee at Masianokeng in Maseru.

Mrs. Seleteng said disability is not an illness and urged women with disabilities to partake in issues of developments, saying her Office advocates for social well-being of vulnerable people hence the commemoration.

She said the commemoration created an opportunity for the Office to learn more about challenges facing women with disabilities, indicating they will ensure that such challenges are addressed by relevant ministries and stakeholders.

LNFOD Women’s Committee Deputy Chairperson, Mrs. Ntahli Griffith thanked the Office of the First Lady for commemorating women’s month with the, saying by virtue of nature, women with disabilities are vulnerable as they face many challenges such as unemployment, discrimination and abuse.

She said the skills and knowledge acquired at the event will promote independence among women with disabilities as they will be in a position to establish income generating projects.

The African Women’s Month is commemorated annually in August.
