GEF Calls for Partnerships

Mokhotlong – Global Environment Facility GEF has urged Mokhotlong community to partner and utilise opportunities offered through the Small Grants Programme SGP on environmental protection.

The National Coordinator GEF-SGP Lesotho Mrs. ‘Makhauhelo Majara said this during a capacity building workshop on grant making in Operational Phase six OP 6 for Mokhotlong community.

Mrs. Majara said there are a number of opportunities offered through their SGP which need people to join hands and develop plans on tackling environmental issues within their respective communities, saying their focal areas during the OP 5 included biodiversity conservation, climate change, sustainable land and land degradation, international waters and as well as chemicals and capacity development.

She said now that they are about to resume SGP OP 6, they invite innovative ideas from social groups which are focused on landscape which mainly have aspects to address issues on protection of both environment as well as livelihood improvement.

One of the workshop participants, National Identity and Civil Registration District Manager Advocate Matekoa Sebapalo said there is a rising concern about the mining industry as some mines are mushrooming everywhere without proper framework on pollution management.

Mokhotlong District Administrator Mr. Molefe Mpesi said they have learned a lot from the training and there is a need to share skills gained with others for the development of the district.

The workshop was attended by Wool and Mohair Growers Association, dairy farmers, Non-Governmental Associations and civil servants.
