IEC Falls Short of Target

Maseru – The Independent Electoral Commission IEC has failed to reach the target of 85 percent of voter turnout during the weekend’s snap general elections.

IEC Public Relations Officer Mr. Tuoe Hants’i said the Commission could only manage a 47.8 percent of voter turnout which is far below their target, saying there was a slight improvement of voter turnout of about 1.8 percent compared to the 2015 elections.

Mr. Hants’i said the IEC commission was working against time and engaged in roadshow campaigns in some of parts of the country in a bid to encourage voter turnout, roping in some local artists to lobby eligible voters.

The IEC election period comes to an end on Saturday after which the Commission will begin the continuous voter registration, and to also prepare for Local government elections that will be held before the end of the year.
