Maseru – Inscribed 1968-2015 “I feel refined by all challenges before me…we shall overcome”, the late Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao’s monument was on unveiled in Ha Lekete in Maseru over the weekend.
The unveiling, spearheaded by the Mahao family was witnessed by multitudes from various angles as well as Principal Chiefs, Members of Parliament, some Ministers as well as the families of Khetheng, Ramahloko, Qobete and wives of soldiers who were recently released from detention at the Maximum Security Prison.
Speaking at the event on behalf of government the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Honourable Machesetsa Mofomobe said government has the responsibility to ensure that justice is served, saying justice is not vengeance.
The Principal Chief of Ha Maama Chieftainess Mabela Maama urged Basotho to support all whose loved ones were brutally killed and made a proposition for the establishment of a Trust Fund towards the education of the son of the late Mohau Qobete who now lives with his aged grandmother, who is struggling to make ends meet because her slain son was the sole breadwinner for the family.
At the same event Mr Khopotso Liphoto of Action for Peace and Solidarity said the initiative aims to carry forward the late Maaparankoe’s legacy and aspirations of peace, justice and the rule of law, adding that they are planning activities that include a Memorial Lecture in August.
The unveiling was graced by activities such as poetry by the deceased’s wife, Mrs. ‘Mamphanya Mahao in honour of her husband whom she hailed as truthful, stern on justice and an advocate for the rule law, while on behalf of the family, Mr. Ntahli Matete thanked Basotho for their support.
Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao was assassinated on June 25, 2015 at Mokema in Maseru.
