Maseru – National Security Service NSS has proposed dismissal of 54 officers whose employment is believed to have been irregular, and the proposal is yet to be dealt with.
The NSS Human Resource office said the officers were employed between December 2016 and May 2017, and some have already been trained while some are still to go for training, adding that the institution wanted candidates aged between 18 and 25 with Diploma as a maximum qualification, but these 54 were all over age and some of them are degree holders.
According to the NSS these irregularities were picked up when the institution management changed.
Meanwhile, officers promoted on December 15, 2016 and May 01, 2017 are also likely to be returned to their former positions as previous management is suspected to have not followed proper procedure when handling the promotions.
The Minister of Defence Honourable Sentje Lebona is yet to look into the requests and issue his response in due course.
The NSS has been one of the controversial institutions in the past few months, with its officers suspected of being involved in politics, and the government’s decision to deploy Mr. Tumo Lekhooa as Director General from the Lesotho Defence Force LDF also raised questions about the role he was expected to perform.
He has since returned to the LDF.
