Maseru – Lioli Football Club FC from Berea made history after successfully defending the LNIG Top 8 Cup Final two years in a row after narrowly disposing off the stubborn Lesotho Correctional Service LCS via the Jerry Kamele second half goal.
The final was played at Setsoto Stadium on Sunday and Lioli went home with 100 000 Maloti plus a floating trophy and gold medals, while final losers LCS settled for the 80 000 Maloti plus silver medals.
Lesotho Defence Force LDF recovered from the humiliating 5-0 from Lioli on Saturday by defeating Bantu for the third place play off on Sunday and obtained 60 000 Maloti plus bronze medals while Bantu got a consolation prize of 50 000 Maloti.
Lioli’s Kamele who ensured that his team won the cup earned himself three individual prizes after being selected Player of the Tournament, scoring the Goal of the Tournament and being the Player of the Match at the final taking a total prize money of 5500 Maloti for his efforts.
In a post-match interview, Lioli Coach Mr. Mosholu Mokhothu said he was happy for having led the team to its historic defence of the title and commended the players for sticking to the game plan.
On the other hand, LCS Coach Mr. Mpitsa Marai said he was not disappointed with the loss but full of praise for his players who appeared for the first time at the cup final, saying he is now going to concentrate on the domestic league in which LCS, Matlama and Lioli are chasing the league title.
LNIG splashed a total of 600 000 Maloti as sponsorship plus an additional 18 000 Maloti for individual prizes to the players and match officials.
Lioli first won this cup last year after dethroning Bantu which were the first team to win it under the current sponsorship.
