Lesotho Marks Museums Day

Maseru – In commemoration of International Museums Day, the new Executive Committee of the Friends of Morija Museum and Archives has organised a learning tour of Matsieng and Morija Royal villages on Wednesday.

Morija Museum and Archives Curator Mr. Stephen Gill said the aim of the tour named, Heroes Day Excursion, is to highlight latest developments at the Morija Cultural Precinct and in the greater Makhoarane Heritage Area to participants.

Mr. Gill said the tour will start from the Royal Archives in Matsieng and move to Makeneng, and then proceed to Morija Museum where a short presentation by the new Friends of Morija Museum and Archives will be made.

International Museums Day is celebrated on May 18th since 1977, to raise awareness on the importance of museums in the development of society, and the theme for this year’s celebration is, “Museums and Cultural Landscapes”.

The theme highlights the link between museums and cultural heritage as it enhances the idea of museums as territorial centres involved in protecting the cultural landscape.

The primary mission of museums is to oversee heritage within and beyond their walls.
