Maseru – It is important for Africa to come up with strategies for creating jobs for the youth and one such strategy should be on the promotion of youth cooperatives.
This was said by the Minister of Small Business Development, Cooperatives and Marketing Honourable Thabiso Lits’iba when speaking at the official launching ceremony of the BOLESWA Tripartite Youth Cooperatives Forum in Maseru.
He said the youth are pillars of sustainable cooperatives and urged them to take their recognition by the International Cooperatives Alliance ICA seriously by ensuring that youth cooperatives are promoted in their respective countries and in Africa as a whole.
Honourable Lits’iba added that the youth cooperatives offer a number of advantages that include instilling a collective spirit and they can be building blocks for national, regional as well as international cooperatives movement hence the need for active participation of youth in cooperatives activities.
Speaking at the ceremony the ICA President Mr. Stanley Muchiri commended the youth members of cooperatives from the three countries of Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland for establishing a forum for the promotion of cooperatives movement in their countries.
He said ICA is impressed by the move hence their recognition into the ICA family and urged the youth to engage each other so as to lead successful cooperatives for the improvement of their living conditions.
The Forum is intended to afford the youth with a platform to promote indigenous skills through exchange programmes.
At the ceremony the Lesotho youth members of cooperatives were applauded for playing a leading role in participation as the two sister countries learnt a lot from their Lesotho counterparts on management of youth activities regarding the cooperatives movement.
