Local Government Elections Next Year

Maseru – The Independent Electoral Commission IEC has announced that Local Government Elections will be held on a date to be announced between February and March next year.

IEC Commissioner Advocate ‘Mamosebi Pholo said that the decision follows a series of meetings with party leaders and government representatives, where it was suggested the elections not be held this year in order to honour the celebration of Lesotho’s 50th Independence.

Advocate Pholo said Lesotho People’s Congress and Marematlou Freedom Party were not part of the meetings due to their internal disputes saying the IEC is awaiting a court decision as to who are the rightful Executive Committees.

The Deputy Director of Elections Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane said they had 23 political parties for the 2015 elections and other political parties have applied to register for the Local Government Elections.
