Maseru – The Ministry of Gender, Youth and Sports has organised a series of activities to commemorate African Women’s Month from Monday.
According to the Principal Gender Officer in the Ministry Mr. Mathoka Khaile, the commemoration, whose theme is “Basotho Women’s Freedom from Slavery: Women rise, its time” is intended to ensure inclusion of women in decision making.
Mr. Khaile said the Minister of Gender will launch the commemoration of African Women’s Month by delivering a speech at different media houses on Monday, and the Ministry will also host forums at Rothe, Matsieng, Baeng and Peka on August ninth, 16th, 24th and 25th respectively.
He said the forums will create an opportunity for the participants to discuss the importance of inclusion of women in decision making and to encourage them to partake in the forthcoming local government elections to promote representation of women in community councils.
He added that the participants will also be sensitised about cultural traditions and norms that discriminate women as well as HIV and AIDS, adding that different organisations will also commemorate the month in a variety of ways.
African Women’s Month is commemorated annually in August as a tribute to more than 20 000 South African women who marched to the Union Buildings on August ninth,1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
